How to Use the EML Viewer
Load one .eml file, or paste its source, and the viewer decodes the whole message in your browser.
- Upload an .eml file, or paste the full message source including its headers.
- Tick Load remote images only if you trust the sender and want to see pictures.
- Select View email to read the headers, the text and the rendered HTML.
- Download attachments from the list, or send the headers to the Email Header Analyzer.
What the EML Viewer Shows
The EML viewer shows the decoded headers, the text and HTML body, and every attachment of a saved email message.
EML Header Viewer
The viewer unfolds long header lines and decodes encoded subjects and sender names, so =?UTF-8?B?…?= becomes readable text. From, To, Cc, Date, Subject and Message-ID are listed first, and the complete header block is offered for copying. A missing From or Date header is flagged because RFC 5322 requires both.
View EML as HTML
The HTML part is shown in a sandboxed frame that removes scripts, forms and event handlers before rendering. Images referenced as cid: are replaced with the matching inline parts from the file and shown straight away. Remote images remain blocked until you allow them, because they can tell the sender when the message was opened.
EML Viewer With Attachments
Every attachment and inline part is listed with its file name, media type and decoded size. Names written in RFC 2231 or encoded-word form are decoded, so accents survive. Each file can be downloaded as it was sent, without being opened in the page.
Read EML File Online
The parser runs in your browser, so you can read an .eml file online without sending its content to a server. It handles multipart messages, base64 and quoted-printable transfer encodings, and the UTF-8, ISO-8859-1 and Windows-1252 character sets. Files up to 2 MB can be uploaded.
EML vs MSG Files
EML is an open, text-based email file format, while MSG is a binary format tied to one desktop mail program.
| Aspect | EML | MSG |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Plain text with MIME parts (RFC 5322) | Binary compound file with properties |
| Readable in a text editor | Yes, headers and text are visible | No, needs a converter or the original program |
| Opens in this viewer | Yes | No, export the message as .eml first |
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is an EML File?
An .eml file is one email message saved as plain text in the Internet Message Format. It holds the headers, the body and any attachments encoded in MIME parts, which is why most mail programs can open it.
How Do I Open an EML File?
Upload it to this viewer or paste its source into the box, then select View email. You can also open it in a desktop mail program, but the viewer needs no installation and works on any device with a browser.
Is It Safe to Open an EML File?
Reading the message is low risk here because scripts are removed and remote images stay blocked by default. The danger is in attachments and links, so only open a downloaded attachment when you trust the sender.
Can EML Files Contain Viruses?
The text of an .eml file cannot run by itself, but its attachments can carry malware. Check the attachment names and types in the list before downloading, and treat unexpected executables or macro documents as suspicious.
